Platinum is the principal metal of the platinum group metals which include palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium, and iridium. Each of these metals possess chemical and physical qualities that make them vital industrial materials. Platinum is one of the world’s scarcest metals. Supplies of platinum are concentrated in South Africa, with significantly smaller supplies in Russia and North America. The jewelry trade creates the largest demand for platinum, followed by the automotive industry as well as chemical and petroleum refining uses. Platinum is also used in the computer industry and in other electronic applications since it is an excellent conductor of electricity, does not corrode, and has a low reactivity with other metals.
While people have invested in gold and silver for many years, platinum trading has only just taken off. Although it has a much shorter history in the financial sector than gold or silver, its prices are relatively volatile due to its importance as an industrial material together with its limited production and small concentration of suppliers. These benefits have pushed Platinum volume higher over the recent years while making it a comfortable and liquid form of investment.
Trading platinum in our platform is as accessible as trading any other spot commodity. Similar to other precious metals such as Gold or Silver, Platinum spot trades are executed in much the same way as foreign currency pairs, with transactions being made against the dollar according to the spot rate.
