Banco Santander is a large, esteemed Spanish bank. It was established in 1857 and has merged with Banesto, another Spanish bank in 2012. It is part of the Santander Group, which is the largest banking service in the Eurozone by market value. Furthermore, in terms of market capitalization, it is among the biggest worldwide.
Banco Santander offers a variety of financial services and products for corporate, business and private clients. The Santander Group operates not just in Spain but also in the whole of Latin America, Europe and in the United Kingdom. According to some experts, the geographical diversity of the bank has helped it manage the financial crisis better than many other banks in the world.

- In 2013 Santander was named the Greenest Global Bank by Bloomberg.
- The former chairman of Banco Santander, Emilio Botin, who passed away in 2014, was highly esteemed in Spain, and according to some reports, his statements about the economy were perceived as more valuable by the public than statements made by leading politicians.
